General Protection Data Regulation (GDPR)

 In data protection, GDPR, Security

GDPR, as you probably know, is legally effective from 25th of May 2018. The basic principles of data protection have remained. GDPR has greater emphasis on:

  • Transparency – individuals are aware of the information that is held by you on them.
  • Security – information on the system and/ or physically held is safe and locked away.
  • Accountability: that everyone in your organisation is up to date on their requirements and training has been done.
  • Rights of the individual – the kernel of this legislation. It is most important that the personal information is safely kept and that their consent is required to use any extra information added, i.e. individual’s consent is needed if you want to add/ delete/ change purpose of use of the information

Enforcement powers of Supervisory Authority:
The Data Protection Commissioner has much greater powers (because of GDPR) and to follow up on any issues, has received a large numerical increase in staff.

It is important to carry out a GDPR audit to see where your business stands on this issue and to see what steps need to be taken to get all staff up to date on their duties. We at JMAC are GDPR facilitators and can help you with an audit of your business.
